Music Therapy at Middlechurch
For twelve weeks between January and April, Jay and I were given the opportunity to put our music therapy training to good use at Middlechurch Home. As music therapy practicum students from Canadian Mennonite University, we visited Middlechurch each Tuesday, meeting with individual residents as well as leading a small music therapy group in the activity centre.
Though we have a lot of fun making music together with residents, music therapy is also an evidence-based practice that can address a wide range of therapeutic goals. At Middlechurch, these goals will often relate to cognitive, social, and emotional objectives. In order to be effective, it is important for us to develop strong therapeutic relationships with clients, emphasizing trust, safety, and agency. What makes music therapy such an exciting approach is its ability to facilitate both verbal and non-verbal expression through meaningful musical experiences; music has an incredible way of connecting us with others through shared music-making and with our selves through the recalling of life-giving memories.
In our music therapy group, Jay and I, together with five residents across different units, came together each week to share creative experiences and ultimately build a strong and supportive community. Memorable moments, to name a few, included ‘conducting’ to classical music, improvising solos on small percussion instruments, re-writing lyrics to a timeless classic, and, of course, singing favourite songs together! With music as our guide, sessions offered an opportunity to take care of our minds, bodies, and spirits, all while sharing a good time with others.
We would like to thank everyone at Middlechurch Home for letting us join your community these past few months and for all the support we received from both staff and residents. This has been a powerful learning experience, and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to make music together!

On April 15th, Resident Council held their first staff appreciation event. Our amazing staff were treated to coffee and donuts on all 3 shifts. Our resident council members enjoyed handing out treats and and thanking the staff for all their hard work! Great Job everyone!

Thank you to Middlechurch’s own Justin Seguin for putting on a concert for the resident.
